A vantage point on the Coumba Freida
North of the Serena Col sits a mountain chain that divides the Planaval valley from the large Coumba Freida. Its NE aspect makes this route a good choice for the entire season, offering infinite laps and sensational storm skiing.
This itinerary goes along the Sereina Valley and then turns right at the height of Arp du Bois dessous. Some sections are delicate and require adequate competence and technical skills. The view from the top encompasses the resort of Crévacol and the imposing S face of Mont Velan, as well as the facing Grande Rochère and Aiguille de Bonalex.
Head due west going under the flyover of the Grand Saint Bernard tunnel and, following the track of the forest road, climb the first shallow slope. Cross the Belle Combe stream and reach the hamlets of Farettes and Ponty and then, flanking the woods, the one of Eteley. Turn left and run alongside the wood edge as the slope gets steeper. Climb the bare slope, crossed by the forest road several times and then reach the hamlets of Arp du Bois dessous (1950m).
Leave the farmhouses to the right and continue on a somewhat flat stretch, then climb up following the same direction, overcoming a steeper part from which you can see the Serena Col for the first time. When you have reached the altitude of about 2.100m, veer right and climb a large, small valley until you come to a broad shoulder, your elevation 2.480m. Veer left and enter a bowl that needs to be climbed to the left with regards to the summit, until you reach a small ending col. The final, short stretch that will take you to the top (2.739m) is often battered by winds.Â
Descent
Make your descent following your skin track freely as far as the trailhead.
You may choose to go via the wood for the last part, according to snow conditions, with the very end stretch shallowing out.
